Short Film
Indlela Yokuphila (The Soul’s Journey) is a mystical animated short film that follows a child who asks her teacher, Nowandle, how ancestors travel to the sea. In answering, Nowandle unfolds a poetic tale of the soul’s journey after death: a spirit becomes a young ancestor and travels through hidden rivers and underground waterways, revisiting the places she once lived. Drawn by the voices of her great-great-grandmothers, she journeys into the deep ocean, where she absorbs their ancient wisdom and rests within their realm. When the world above calls her back, she rises through the water and is lifted into the clouds, returning to land as rain. A mother drinks this rainwater, and the ancestor is reborn into a new life. Blending Indigenous Zulu spirituality with the natural water cycle, the film creates a lyrical exploration of ancestry, ecology, and the continuity of life.
